Operating in the centre of midfield, the Dane kicked-off his professional career in Germany with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, having left his home of Copenhagen, Denmark, at the age of 16 to pursue footballing ambitions.

With Bayern, he played his part in achieving back-to-back league titles between 2012 and 2014 as well as the German Cup in 2014. Loans spells at Bundesliga rivals FC Augsburg and Schalke 04 followed for the midfielder before a permanent move to Southampton in 2016.
In his first year on the south coast, he helped the Saints reach the League Cup Final for just the second time in their history while, in the 2019 season, he was appointed as their captain. Going on to make 134 appearances in all competitions at St Marys, the 25-year-old has also earned over 30 caps for Denmarks national team since making his international debut in 2014.
